dormakaba achieves first targets in the second year of its five-year sustainability strategic cycle

Thursday, August 31, 2023

Rümlang, August 31, 2023 - Two years after launching the Sustainability Framework and setting more than 30 ESG targets, dormakaba continued to deliver on its sustainability commitments with good results. The company achieved its circular economy targets set for 2023, and is also on track with its Science Based Targets initiative commitment to reduce operational carbon emissions in line with a 1.5° pathway.

dormakaba’s ESG targets and its Sustainability Framework, based on three Pillars – People, Planet and Partnerships – provide a solid foundation to maintain its leading position in the industry. Moreover, these put dormakaba in a favorable position to respond to the rapidly evolving sustainability regulations and requirements.

Below are some of the key sustainability results from the financial year 2022/23 as published in its annual Sustainability Report, released today.

The company reduced its Scope 1+2 emissions by more than 10,000 tCO2e or 13% since the baseline in the financial year 2019/20. This means, that dormakaba is on track with its Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) commitment. The company will continue to keep a strong focus on enabling a low-carbon economy in its industry. In the Sustainability Report, dormakaba is sharing for the first time its clear climate transition plan, aligned with the recommendations from the Task Force on Climate Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD).

dormakaba achieved its 2023 targets to integrate circularity guidelines into the product development process and to have best-in-class energy efficiency for new products. Given that about 80% of the environmental impact of a product is predetermined in the design phase, implementing these guidelines at the beginning of the product development cycle is key to providing more sustainable products for customers. The company already receives positive market responses on its recently introduced sustainable product innovations, such as the sensor-controlled automatic door system or the Door Efficiency Calculator, that improves the energy balance of the buildings, while reducing costs and CO2 emissions.

Moreover, 90% of the waste generated at the dormakaba sites was diverted away from disposal and instead recycled, reused, recovered (including raw materials and energy recovery) or stored on-site. This is an important milestone regarding its target to send zero waste to landfill until 2027. Across its manufacturing sites, dormakaba has already reduced the waste being sent to landfill by 31% versus the baseline year.

Keeping its employees safe is a top priority for dormakaba. In 2023 the company published its global Health & Safety Directive, which is the most important foundation for a positive safety culture. The company is also putting more focus on reporting unsafe observations, which is a key element in proactively preventing injuries and accidents. In this financial year, employees submitted more than 1,200 unsafe observations versus seven in the financial year 2021/22.

The company has been working together with EcoVadis since 2019 to assess its suppliers based on various sustainability criteria. Since the launch of the collaboration, 23.7% of the high-risk supplier group has been assessed. 42% of these suppliers have undergone a follow-up reassessment, and around 60% of the reassessed suppliers improved their score, with an overall improvement of 3.4 score points.

Going forward, dormakaba will intensify these and other initiatives to meet its objectives as a leader in ESG in the industry. Read more about the targets and progress made in the dormakaba Sustainability Report 2022/23.
